This NORBA Cross Country race may have been one of the greatest races in mountain bike history. Coming into this race; John Tomac was two points ahead of local favorite Tinker Juarez for the National Championship. Not only was "Johnny T" coming in as the points leader in Cross Country, he also came in with a dominating lead in the National Downhill series as well. It is unlikely that will ever happen again. However, Big Bear was a very tough course; when Ned Overend, Tinker Juarez and John Tomac have to walk up part of the track; you know it's brutal. About 2000' up and 2000' down; three times over a dusty, rocky, hot mountain race course. Ned took the win, Tinker came in third to win the National Championship.
